From our brief study on the subject of tongues we have been
able to see the following.
Tongues is for ALL believers.
Mark16:17 And these signs shall follow them that believe; In
my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new
tongues;
Hence No believer in scripture ever got excluded from
speaking with tongues.
Acts2:4 And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and
began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them
utterance.
Everyone there spoke in tongues.
Acts8:14 Now when the apostles which were at Jerusalem
heard that Samaria had received the word of God, they sent
unto them Peter and John:
15 Who, when they were come down, prayed for them, that
they might receive the Holy Ghost:
16 (For as yet he was fallen upon none of them: only they were
baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.)
17 Then laid they their hands on them, and they received the
Holy Ghost.
No selections.
They laid hands on those who believed the gospel to recieve.
Acts10:44 While Peter yet spake these words, the Holy Ghost
fell on all them which heard the word.
45 And they of the circumcision which believed were
astonished, as many as came with Peter, because that on the
Gentiles also was poured out the gift of the Holy Ghost.
46 For they heard them speak with tongues, and magnify God.
Everyone who believed here spoke with tongues.Lord Jesus.
Acts19:6 And when Paul had laid his hands upon them, the
Holy Ghost came on them; and they spake with tongues, and
prophesied.
Again no one is excluded. All the men who believed spoke with
tongues.
HANDS CAN BE LAID ON BELIEVERS TO MINISTER THE
THINGS OF THE SPIRIT TO THEM(INCLUDING TONGUES).
Acts8:17 Then laid they their hands on them, and they
received the Holy Ghost.
18 And when Simon saw that through laying on of the
apostles' hands the Holy Ghost was given.
This isnt exclusive to apostles.
Acts9:17 And Ananias went his way, and entered into the
house; and putting his hands on him said, Brother Saul, the
Lord, even Jesus, that appeared unto thee in the way as thou
camest, hath sent me, that thou mightest receive thy sight,
and be filled with the Holy Ghost.
Ananias was not an apostle but a disciple.A disciple means a
student of the Word
Acts9:10 And there was a certain disciple at Damascus,
named Ananias; and to him said the Lord in a vision, Ananias.
And he said, Behold, I am here, Lord.
Non Apostles(infact students of the Word) saw visions and
ministered the things of the Spirit.
Acts19:6 And when Paul had laid his hands upon them, the
Holy Ghost came on them; and they spake with tongues, and
prophesied.
Pauls letters to Timothy emphasised this too
1Tim4:14 Neglect not the gift that is in thee, which was given
thee by prophecy, with the laying on of the hands of the
presbytery.
Presbytery means elders. Those who teach and preach in
Church.
2Tim1:6 Wherefore I put thee in remembrance that thou stir up
the gift of God, which is in thee by the putting on of my hands.
This can be done individually or enmasse.
TONGUES IS FOR PRAYER AND PRAISE TO GOD.
1COR14:2 For he that speaketh in an unknown tongue
speaketh not unto men, but unto God: for no man
understandeth him; howbeit in the spirit he speaketh
mysteries.
1COR14:14- For if I pray in an unknown tongue, my spirit
prayeth, but my understanding is unfruitful.
15- What is it then? I will pray with the spirit, and I will pray
with the understanding also: I will sing with the spirit, and I
will sing with the understanding also.
This explains Pauls instructions to pray.
Eph6:18 Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the
Spirit, and watching thereunto with all perseverance and
supplication for all saints.
Also Judes admonition
Jude20 But ye, beloved, building up yourselves on your most
holy faith, praying in the Holy Ghost,
Praying in tongues is praying in the Spirit.Singing in tongues is
singing in the Spirit.
TONGUES IS NOT HUMAN LANGUAGE.
1COR14;2 For he that speaketh in an unknown tongue
speaketh not unto men, but unto God: for no man
understandeth him; howbeit in the spirit he speaketh
mysteries.
Vs-14 For if I pray in an unknown tongue, my spirit prayeth, but
my understanding is unfruitful.
vs16 -Else when thou shalt bless with the spirit, how shall he
that occupieth the room of the unlearned say Amen at thy
giving of thanks, seeing he understandeth not what thou sayest
vs-19 Yet in the church I had rather speak five words with my
understanding, that by my voice I might teach others also,
than ten thousand words in an unknown tongue.
Hence,In the Church we must communicate the message of
tongues via interpretation(Which in itself is by the Spirit)
This interpretation of tongues =Prophecy.
1Cor14:5 I would that ye all spake with tongues but rather that
ye prophesied: for greater is he that prophesieth than he that
speaketh with tongues, except he interpret, that the church
may receive edifying.
Prophecy gives the messsage of tongues in human
understanding(language),Hence the reason it edifies the
church.
1Cor14:3 But he that prophesieth speaketh unto men to
edification, and exhortation, and comfort.
This helps with verses 14-17 too.
Pauls instructions in 1 Corinthians14 was not to discourage
tongues and "glorify" prophecy.
Rather its was to show the greater benefit in gattherings. The
instructions were for Church meetings primarily.
1Cor14:16 Else when thou shalt bless with the spirit, how shall
he that occupieth the room of the unlearned say Amen at thy
giving of thanks, seeing he understandeth not what thou
sayest?
17 For thou verily givest thanks well, but the other is not
edified.
The 'other" is not the speaker. The speaker is already edified
(vs4).This is in church.u need to speak in understanding to
communicate.
vs18 I thank my God, I speak with tongues more than ye all:
vs19 Yet in the church I had rather speak five words with my
understanding, that by my voice I might teach others also,
than ten thousand words in an unknown tongue.
Paul used prophecy more in Church and Spoke more in
tongues privately.
1Cor14:23 If therefore the whole church be come together
into one place, and all speak with tongues, and there come in
those that are unlearned, or unbelievers, will they not say that
ye are mad?
24- But if all prophesy, and there come in one that believeth
not, or one unlearned, he is convinced of all, he is judged of
all:
25- And thus are the secrets of his heart made manifest; and
so falling down on his face he will worship God, and report
that God is in you of a truth.
The issue isnt tongues spoken by the whole Church, rather the
"coming in" of the unbeliever and the unlearned.
The unlearned is a believer who hasnt been taught the things
of the spirit.
Tongues can be spoken in Church without having to interprete
but this isnt used to address any one but God.
1Cor14:28 But if there be no interpreter, let him keep silence
in the church; and let him speak to himself, and to God.
Believers should desire to interprete tongues. Its the same
stream.This interpretation is prophecy.
1Cor14 :1Follow after charity, and desire spiritual gifts, but
rather that ye may prophesy.
vs-13 Wherefore let him that speaketh in an unknown tongue
pray that he may interprete
vs39 Wherefore, brethren, covet to prophesy, and forbid not to
speak with tongues.
Tongues are used to give messages in Church. This MUST be
interpreted.
1Cor14:26 How is it then, brethren? when ye come together,
every one of you hath a psalm, hath a doctrine, hath a tongue,
hath a revelation, hath an interpretation. Let all things be done
unto edifying.
27 -If any man speak in an unknown tongue, let it be by two, or
at the most by three, and that by course; and let one interpret
All Believers can prophesy
1Cor14:23 If therefore the whole church be come together
into one place, and all speak with tongues, and there come in
those that are unlearned, or unbelievers, will they not say that
ye are mad?
24- But if all prophesy, and there come in one that believeth
not, or one unlearned, he is convinced of all, he is judged of
all:
25 -And thus are the secrets of his heart made manifest; and
so falling down on his face he will worship God, and report
that God is in you of a truth.
vs-31 For ye may all prophesy one by one, that all may learn,
and all may be comforted.
In brevity, believers MUST go after the things of the Spirit !
Not forgetting Pauls admonition
1Cor12:31 But covet earnestly the best gift.
1Cor14 :1Follow after charity, and desire spiritual gifts, but
rather that ye may prophesy.
vs-39 Wherefore, brethren, covet to prophesy, and forbid not
to speak with tongues.
Thus like paul we can boldly proclaim
"I thank my God, I speak with tongues more than ye all"
Blessed?I give my self to tongues and the things of the Spirit.u
have a blessed weekend.
