Baptism as a biblical concept requires some study and
attention. Many too often than not always identify it with
water. If we take a look through all scriptures and without a
preconceived notion light will shine on our paths. There’s a
huge difference between Jesus' baptism and John’s baptism.
Baptism means to be "Immersed Into"; it's not poured or
sprinkled.
Jesus baptizes with The Holy Ghost.
John baptized with water.
Matthew 3:11 I indeed baptize you with water unto
repentance, but He who is coming after me is mightier than I,
whose sandals I am not worthy to carry. He will baptize you
with the Holy Spirit and fire (additional reference-Luke3:16).
Baptism in/ with The Holy Ghost has replaced baptism of
water. Water was symbolic of the Holy Ghost.
Acts 1:5 For John truly baptized with water; but ye shall be
baptized with the Holy Ghost not many days hence
1Corinthians 12:13 For by one Spirit are we all baptized into
one body, whether we be Jews or Gentiles, whether we be
bond or free; and have been all made to drink into one Spirit.
This Baptism is our immersion INTO CHRIST, by believing in
the Gospel.
Matthew 28:18 And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying,
all power is given unto me in heaven and in earth.
19 Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in
the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost:
Mark16:15 And he said unto them, Go ye into all the world,
and preach the gospel to every creature.
16 He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that
believeth not shall be damned...
Paul’s encounter with the twelve men at Ephesus should help
our understanding.
Acts 19: 1 And it came to pass, that, while Apollos was at
Corinth, Paul having passed through the upper coasts came to
Ephesus: and finding certain disciples,
2 He said unto them, Have ye received the Holy Ghost since
ye believed? And they said unto him, we have not so much as
heard whether there be any Holy Ghost.
3 And he said unto them, unto what then were ye baptized?
And they said, Unto John's baptism.
4 Then said Paul, John verily baptized with the baptism of
repentance, saying unto the people, that they should believe
on him which should come after him, that is, on Christ Jesus.
5 When they heard this, they were baptized in the name of the
Lord Jesus.
6 And when Paul had laid his hands upon them, the Holy
Ghost came on them; and they spake with tongues, and
prophesied.
Note verse 5-When they are HEARD, THEY WERE BAPTISED! It
couldn't have been water, as they had been baptised with
water already before Paul met them!
While it is true that many continued with water baptism in the
book of Acts after Redemption just as they did several other
traditions, bible doctrine instructs that ALL symbols ended
with the reality of Christ’s death, burial and resurrection- the
very essence these symbols foreshadowed and represented.
Colossians 2:16 Let no man therefore judge you in meat, or in
drink, or in respect of an holyday, or of the new moon, or of
the Sabbath days:
17 Which are a shadow of things to come; but the body
(reality) is of Christ.
Paul’s instruction to the Church at Corinth is likewise helpful.
1 Corinthians 1:17 For Christ sent me not to baptize, but to
preach the gospel: not with wisdom of words, lest the cross of
Christ should be made of none effect.
Today we have the REAL WATER-THE HOLY GHOST, THE
REALITY IN CHRIST JESUS (John 7:37-38, John 4: 14).
Baptism thus is identification with or in.
Therefore, just as the Jews were baptized into Moses in the
cloud and sea (1 Corinthians 10:1-2), we have been baptised
Into Christ Jesus.
Galatians 3: 27 For as many of you as have been baptized into
Christ have put on Christ.
Blessed?i have been baptized into Christ by the Holy Ghost,I
have out on Christ, now I am a member of His Body.
If it be the duty of Jesus Christ to baptise in the Holy spirit what was He commanding his desciples to baptise in according to Mathew 28??
