Have You Prophesied since you believed ?(2)
Acts 19:2 KJV
[2] He said unto them, Have ye received the Holy Ghost since
ye believed?...
This question referred to supernatural utterance .
First seen in the second chapter
Acts 2:4 KJV
[4] And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to
speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.
It's obvious they spoke with tongues amongst other things .
As a simple rule of bible interpretation ,the epistles explain the
book of acts to us.
This book is an eye witness account .
Nothing written about spiritual growth .
Just historical facts .
Paul teaches that except via Interpretation the audience can't
discern what is said in tongues
1 Corinthians 14:2,16,23 KJV
[2] For he that speaketh in an unknown tongue speaketh not
unto men, but unto God: for no man understandeth him ;
howbeit in the spirit he speaketh mysteries.
16] Else when thou shalt bless with the spirit, how shall he that
occupieth the room of the unlearned say Amen at thy giving of
thanks, seeing he understandeth not what thou sayest? [23] If
therefore the whole church be come together into one place,
and all speak with tongues, and there come in those that are
unlearned, or unbelievers, will they not say that ye are mad?
If the audience in Acts 2 did discern the supernatural
utterance here,it must have been because interpretation of
tongues was present as well
Acts 2:6,8,11 KJV
[6] Now when this was noised abroad, the multitude came
together, and were confounded, because that every man heard
them speak in his own language.
8] And how hear we every man in our own tongue, wherein we
were born?
[11] Cretes and Arabians, we do hear them speak in our
tongues the wonderful works of God.
To follow Pauls teaching ,tongues will be unknown to man
except if interpreted .
Further more Peters sermon much later didn't mention tongues
He taught from Joel's Prophecy
Acts 2:16-18 KJV
[16] But this is that which was spoken by the prophet Joel;
[17] And it shall come to pass in the last days, saith God, I will
pour out of my Spirit upon all flesh: and your sons and your
daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see
visions, and your old men shall dream dreams:
[18] And on my servants and on my handmaidens I will pour
out in those days of my Spirit; and they shall prophesy:
Peter emphasizes prophesying .
Some have thought ,we had a convergence of different
languages on this ocassion .
Firstly and critically is to fully assert that Pentecost was a
feast for Jews including those in diaspora .
So all men present were natively Jews
Acts 2:5,14 KJV
[5] And there were dwelling at Jerusalem Jews, devout men,
out of every nation under heaven.
[14] But Peter, standing up with the eleven, lifted up his voice,
and said unto them, Ye men of Judaea, and all ye that dwell at
Jerusalem, be this known unto you, and hearken to my words:
Earlier mentioned nations were places of domicile not their
native origin.
They would travel down to Jerusalem for such National Feasts
As Jesus' parents did earlier for the Passover
Luke 2:41 KJV
[41] Now his parents went to Jerusalem every year at the feast
of the passover.
Same as Paul
Acts 20:16 KJV
[16] For Paul had determined to sail by Ephesus, because he
would not spend the time in Asia: for he hasted, if it were
possible for him, to be at Jerusalem the day of Pentecost.
He lived in Diaspora .
1 Corinthians 16:8 KJV
[8] But I will tarry at Ephesus until Pentecost.
Obviously the entire audience in Acts 2 had a common
language as they were Jews .
So if tongues was spoken and the audience knew what was
being said then it means we had interpretation of tongues in
operation .
Paul explains this
1 Corinthians 14:5 KJV
[5] I would that ye all spake with tongues, but rather that ye
prophesied: for greater is he that prophesieth than he that
speaketh with tongues, except he interpret, that the church
may receive edifying.
Tongues plus interpretation of tongues equals prophecy .
Obviously those who received the Gift of the Holy Ghost in the
book of acts prophesied via tongues plus interpretation
Whilst we might not find this readily explained in two other
instances ,we can infer from it.
Acts 8:18,20-21 KJV
[18] And when Simon saw that through laying on of the
apostles' hands the Holy Ghost was given, he offered them
money,
[20] But Peter said unto him, Thy money perish with thee,
because thou hast thought that the gift of God may be
purchased with money.
[21] Thou hast neither part nor lot in this matter: for thy heart
is not right in the sight of God.
Tongues wasn't mentioned rather" matter "or better still
utterances.
Just like Acts 2
Acts 10:45-46 KJV
[45] And they of the circumcision which believed were
astonished, as many as came with Peter, because that on the
Gentiles also was poured out the gift of the Holy Ghost.
[46] For they heard them speak with tongues, and magnify
God. Then answered Peter,
Tongues and Magnified God.
They knew they Praised God because they understood the
tongues via interpretation .
Some have wondered if tongues were languages of others
from different nations .
It's clear Peter and Cornelius spoke same language in day to
day usual communication .
Peter didn't preach earlier using an interpreter .
The tongues will be new tongues ( mark 16:17)
Pauls submission later on should clear the air
1 Corinthians 14:18 KJV
[18] I thank my God, I speak with tongues more than ye all:
If tongues refer to human languages not spoken by the speaker
in every day use ,this would look preposterous .
Tongues is unknown to mans understanding except via
interpretation .
1 Corinthians 14:2 KJV
[2] For he that speaketh in an unknown tongue speaketh not
unto men, but unto God: for no man understandeth him ;
howbeit in the spirit he speaketh mysteries.
Notice "him "is italicized .
No man understands tongues ,not the speaker .
That said .
Much later in Ephesus, this emerges Better and clearer
After the highlighted question
Acts 19:2 KJV
[2] He said unto them, Have ye received the Holy Ghost since
ye believed?
Paul goes further to minister the gift or things of the Holy
Ghost which is supernatural utterances to the audience
Acts 19:6 KJV
[6] And when Paul had laid his hands upon them, the Holy
Ghost came on them; and they spake with tongues, and
prophesied.
Prophecy is in a known language ,Tongues is unknown to
mans mind except via interpretation .
So ,at the first instance ,the believers here spoke in tongues
and interpretation of tongues .
It's clear that's what was taught and desired .
If we stick to just tongues in our preaching ,that's what our
audience will desire .
Things of the Spirit specifically utterances respond to desire
1 Corinthians 12:31 KJV
[31] But covet earnestly the best gifts:
To covet means to want .
1 Corinthians 14:1 KJV
.. and desire spiritual gifts , but rather that ye may prophesy.
Rather here means much more ,we shall view this later
Desire .
1 Corinthians 14:12 KJV
[12] Even so ye, forasmuch as ye are zealous of spiritual gifts ,
seek that ye may excel to the edifying of the church.
Zealous here means want earnestly .We must seek to edify .
Edify here refers to prophesying as he had earlier taught
1 Corinthians 14:3-4 KJV
[3] But he that prophesieth speaketh unto men to edification,
and exhortation, and comfort. [4] he that prophesieth edifieth
the church.
We must desire ,want and earnestly seek to.
1 Corinthians 14:39 KJV
[39] Wherefore, brethren, covet to prophesy, and forbid not to
speak with tongues.
All believers must want to speak in tongues plus interpretation
.
It's very possible every time ,and in every church meeting .
1 Corinthians 14:26 KJV
[26] How is it then, brethren? when ye come together, every
one of you hath a psalm, hath a doctrine, hath a tongue, hath
a revelation, hath an interpretation. Let all things be done unto
edifying.
He doesn't mention prophecy here but obviously implies it if
we had been following his narratives .
Edifying here is tongues plus interpretation of tongues ,which is
prophecy .
All church members should and can prophesy .
1 Corinthians 14:23 KJV
[23] If therefore the whole church be come together into one
place, and all speak with tongues...
We can all speak in tongues .
In prayer and praise .
We can interpret and prophesy too
All of us
1 Corinthians 14:24 KJV
[24] But if all prophesy..
This Happens when we want to and if we so desire ,when
rightly taught .
1 Corinthians 12:1 KJV
[1] Now concerning spiritual gifts , brethren, I would not have
you ignorant.
So many tongues speaking believers are in ignorance and
wallow in doubt too as touching things of the spirit including
tongues .
This should not be so .
I counsel that tongues shouldnt be taught Alone without
explaining interpretation of tongues .
We shall view this much later .
However we must all desire things of spirit hence we are able
to answer Pauls query in the affirmative
Have you prophesied since you believed ...
To be continued
I call you blessed
Jesus is Lord,We win
